For our next course it’s time to visit the lovely spa resort of Bagnères-deBigorre to source Tourmalet cheese made nearby in the foothills of the Pyrénées. This sheep’s milk cheese has a distinctive nutty flavour – the perfect complement to our meal and something a little different to savour. Bagnères, in the department of Haute-pyrénées, is itself a real drawcard. There’s the lively traditional quarter where beautiful old houses are dominated by the amazing Tour des Jacobins, famed thermal baths and casino. But it’s the sporting activities available around here which really appeal. Just 15km east of Lourdes (with its airport) it’s been twice included in the Tour de France route. There’s cycling, mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, golf and fantastic skiing at La Mongie. Just imagine a ski area covering 100km with 70 runs and 34 lifts!
