My dream home
A former cognac-maker’s home with fabulous pool in Charente
Charles Miller, of Charente Immobilier, explains why he loves this three-bedroom former cognac-maker’s house, on the market for €395,850
Set in the heart of the prestigious Grande Champagne, the premier cru vineyards of the Cognac region in Charente, sits the little village of St-même-les-carrières. Once it provided the area with the much-prized limestone used to build not just the châteaux and maisons de maître, but almost every building, including barns and chicken houses. And set in the heart of this village is a beautiful cognac-maker’s house, nestled in elegantly landscaped Mediterranean-style gardens that keep the house completely private despite its position. You wouldn’t even know it was there. The house has been lovingly renovated to make a luxurious three-bedroom, two-bathroom home, blending the ultra-modern with some gorgeous period features. I particularly love the sitting room with its unusual terracotta-tiled floor which keeps it cool in the long, hot summers, and the stone fireplace with wood-burning stove that makes a cosy feature in the cooler winter. But my favourite room has to be the summer living room – a vast space, once the distillery (part of the old still has been left in place). This room has walls of glass, plenty of space for entertaining and it also has a swimming pool. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a pineau or ‘cognac-schweppes’ on a summer’s afternoon.
The village bar-restaurant is just a couple of minutes’ walk. It’s popular with the local villagers and a great place to pass the time, read the paper and catch up on the village news. The historic town of Jarnac can also be reached on foot and Cognac itself is just a 15-minute drive away.
