14 While Lara may ex­pe­ri­ence the Day of the Dead one time, she can ex­pe­ri­ence her own death count­less times. Huz­zah? Yes, it’s that old chest­nut – the thing where Crys­tal Dy­nam­ics ac­ci­den­tally made it a thing that Lara Croft has to be ut­terly bru­talised when­ever she dies, so Ei­dos Mon­tréal has (as with many other el­e­ments) just picked up the man­tle and car­ried it on. Plum­met­ing, stabbing, shoot­ing, oh-so-much im­pale­ment, drown­ing and more – you’d think we’d ei­ther be de­sen­si­tised or bored of it by now, but re­ally we’re just un­com­fort­able in more ways than can be com­fort­ably fit into this rel­a­tively small space. It does, in an odd way, make you want to keep Lara alive much more than you oth­er­wise would – the al­ter­na­tive is fre­quently hor­ri­ble.
