Step by step
Dry cement Builders’ sand Washing-up bowl Baton/paint stirrer Water Medium-sized plastic beakers Cooking oil Small plastic cups Pebbles Masking tape
1 MIX SAND & CEMENT
Pour a 50:50 cement:sand mix into the washing-up bowl and mix thoroughly with the baton. Add a dribble of water at a time and keep stirring to make a smooth, firm paste.
3 POUR IN CONCRETE
Carefully pour the concrete into the oiled beaker and immediately insert the paper or plastic cup into the middle. Don’t push the cup all the way to the bottom or your pot will end up being a doughnut shape.
2 BRUSH BEAKERS WITH COOKING OIL
The plastic beakers form the outside edge of your pots so brush the inside with oil to stop the pots from sticking and keep the outer surface smooth.
4 TAPE PLASTIC CUP IN PLACE
As the concrete dries, trapped air will try to push the cup upwards, so use pebbles to weigh the cup down and hold it in place with masking tape. Leave the concrete to set for an hour, then carefully remove the pots from the moulds.
