Keep them blooming
Q Can I prevent ‘Brushfield’s Yellow’ flowers going brown after opening?
KELLY BURNETT, STOCKTON-ON-TEES, COUNTY DURHAM
AThis camellia is a ‘japonica’ cultivar and these hold onto flowers as they fade unlike the ‘williamsii’ types that drop their blooms before they discolour. Because ‘Brushfield’s Yellow’ has pale flowers, they show damage from wind, frost-browning and ageing more than darker colours. There’s probably nothing wrong with your plant – it’s just behaving naturally. If possible, move it to a warmer, more sheltered spot.
