Q Can I save a wilted cucumber?
AIf you started off your cucumber indoors, the growth will have been ‘soft’. Suddenly moving it outside, especially in a hot period, puts a terrible strain on the plant. Evaporation from the leaves increases and the roots can’t cope, so the leaves often become bleached or yellow and the plant wilts. By the time you moved it to a shady spot, the damage was done. Best bet now is to prune it to remove most of the growth and fruit, and keep it fed and watered to see what happens. It’s also possible to start again; you’ll still get a crop from a late June sowing.
