Birds and the trees

-

Many birds still prefer holes in trees to nest in rather than nest boxes, a new study suggests. The reason is artificial nesting sites have higher humidity levels and poorer insulation than tree cavities. But scientists from Poland and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in the UK also found some species, such as great tits, favoured nest boxes, while other species, such as marsh tits, preferred natural sites, even when cavity-like nest boxes are sited close by. Study co-author Marta Maziarz said: “The nest boxes don’t insulate well, but are generally warmer and drier. They may also attract insects or parasites.”

Another study by researchers from Essex University found living next to birdlife can cut the risk of suffering from stress and depression. “Birds around the home, and nature in general, show great promise in preventative health care, making cities healthier, happier places to live,” said lead author Dr Daniel Cox.
