Long live the brimstone!

-

Brimstonerimstone caterpillars that hatch this spring will become butterflies by the summer. They will then be on the wing until late autumn, when the time will come for them to hibernate. They usually tuck themselves away in an evergreen plant such as ivy or privet. Most other garden butterflies have a lifecycle that means adult butterflies don’t live beyond autumn’s first frosts. For example, the gatekeeper overwinters as a caterpillar, while the small white sees out the colder months tucked away in its chrysalis.
