Give hhungry plants the feed they need
Now’s the perfect time to start feeding any plant that has started to produce fruit or flower. I normally use tomato food, as it’s high in potash, meaning it’ll give you a bumper crop. This may sound strange – as it’s ‘tomato food’ – but that’s just a marketing spin to make us buy several varieties of plant food, when one is just fine. I use tomato food on my chillies, peppers, aubergines, squash, chrysanthemums and more - after all, they don’t know they’re not tomatoes! My August-fruiting raspberries ‘Octavia’ need a feed too, as they’re starting to suffer from lack of iron/ manganese in the soil. The leaves are going yellow but the veins are green. This is because raspberries prefer a slightly acidic soil and mine’s more alkaline. Adding a sequestered iron solution to the plants should sort the problem out in no time.
