From tropical climes, aloes thrive in dry, hot conditions so are perfect for our homes at 10C (50F) and upwards. During summer they need only a very light water occasionally, so you can imagine that during winter they need even less – just a smattering every few weeks. Aloes make you think of far-flung holidays in deepest winter, plus you can exotically decorate your patio with them during summer. If you have a large aloe, snap off a leaf and rub its inner gel on bites and stings for a soothing natural remedy.

Keep aloes well-drained – add grit at planting
