Dig a hole wider than the root­ball or pot height, but the same depth and loosen pe­riph­eral soil. Soak the root­ball well in a bucket. Place into the hole, loos­en­ing and spread­ing out the roots. Back­fill the hole, so the tree is planted at the same depth be­fore and en­sur­ing there are no air pock­ets. Firm the soil and wa­ter well. Add a stake and tree-guard if nec­es­sary. A layer of mulch will help sup­press weeds. In its first year, wa­ter well in dry weather to help the tree estab­lish.
