Seldom-grown hardy annualsa to sow in borders now

-

Hardy annuals are a real gift to the gardener, making a new border from scratch because they can be sown directly on the soil surface of the border now. Just sow them direct onto damp, well-raked soil and gently rake them into the soil after sowing. Mix the seed with sharp sand so you can evenly distribute it. Sow the seed in rows or in curved lines to make it easy to distinguish the seedlings from weed seedlings after germination.

As well as weeds, drying March winds are also enemies of hardy annuals, so be ready to water the soil if it dries out.

Hardy annuals will flower in early summer, some for many weeks, and they’ll seed around and give you new plants for free next year, too. For summer colour at the edge of your new border, the following hardy annuals are unmissable.
