Don’t forget to dig
September is a great month to dig your veg plot or allotment – bringing pests to the surface as a snack for birds and exposing perennial weed roots which can be plucked from the soil before it freezes. Consider dividing the veg plot into a number of smaller areas to be dug on different days: it’s a good way of ensuring you don’t overdo it and hurt your back. If you’re starting a new allotment or veg patch, covering soil with cardboard, black plastic sheeting or old carpet over winter will suppress weed growth.
