Raise containers off the ground
Consider all your plants in pots that may be vulnerable to cold and wet this season. Once the frosts come, the excess water from copious rainy days this autumn will be at risk of freezing – damaging and possibly killing plants. It’s not necessarily cold weather that sees off some of our plants over winter, it’s rain, which can freeze or lead to roots or bulbs rotting. To keep the bottoms of your pots out of sitting water, remove their saucers to enable free draining and raise the bottoms off the ground using chocks or pot feet – ceramic ones are often cheap from garden centres.
