Thanks to the scorching summer of 2018, anyone growing grapes should be reaping the rewards of that sun and heat with a bumper harvest. Although we still regard the plump, juicy fruit as a crop for warmer climes, they’ve been grown in the British Isles for centuries and are perfectly hardy. Grapes are not at all difficult to grow; the skill and care is in making them fruit productively. Traditional advice often gets horribly complicated, especially when trying to learn everything in one sitting! But the principles are simple and it’s possible for almost anyone to grow their own wine or dessert grapes, with a little care and by choosing the right variety.
