Get greenhouse watering right
THE PLANTS overwintering under glass at Beechgrove, from containerised fruit in the unheated greenhouse, potted camellias and citrus in the frost-free conservatory, to the half-hardy perennials in the heated greenhouse, are all kept on the dry side in winter. Spells in cold, wet conditions can be deadly. Some watering is necessary especially for those in leaf in heated greenhouses. Feel the moisture in the compost just below its surface and the overall pot weight to gauge watering needs. A light pot with friable soil several centimetres towards the root zone, and clean fingers, could mean a drink is in order. Try to water before the soil is completely dry and in the morning, if possible.
