In pots and containers
Big pots filled with bulbs really make an impact. I use a free-draining compost, which is usually two parts John Innes No. 2 with one part horticultural grit. I plant bulbs closer in pots than I would in the ground, which gives me a bigger impact. Water and feed well during the growing season. Check moisture regularly by pushing your finger into the compost, to ensure it does not dry out – you want it to feel moist but not wet to the touch. For bigger bulbs in pots I tend to use a liquid feed that has a high potassium level, something like tomato feed, from early spring until well after flowering. Keep the pots weed-free.
