Protect brassicas
Brassicas are a valuable source of greens through winter and early spring, when there is little else to rely on to fill our plates. But pigeons, which attack them in winter and spring, are a problem and can quickly decimate your crop. Deter them by using frames covered with netting pulled taut to the ground, but make sure there is enough head room for the plants to grow. Pigeons are clumsy birds and will attempt impossible landings – snapping the tops off your plants – walk in among the plants and take the lowest growth. They’ll also pick what they can through the netting.
