WHY People who grow food feel particularly proud of themselves. Schoolchildren in gardening clubs gain a feeling of achievement with the gardens they create, and RHS Britain in Bloom relies on the power of gardening to foster a sense of civic pride. There’s also pride to be gained in overcoming failures. Dr Jemma Hawkins monitored allotment holders during the wettest summer for years. “The need for resilience added to the sense of achievement when things did go well,” she says.

DID YOU KNOW? A single session at the allotment is enough to make you feel proud of yourself.
