Key plant to prune this month Sum­mer-fruit­ing rasp­ber­ries

These jewels of the fruit gar­den crop from short sideshoots car­ried on vig­or­ous up­right stems or ‘canes’ that – in the case of sum­mer­fruit­ing types – have been made in the pre­vi­ous grow­ing sea­son. Once these have cropped, they are cut down to ground level, leav­ing the new, green canes in place that will, in turn, fruit next sum­mer.
