A fine romance
She may have a record eight Olivier Awards and an Oscar under her belt, but now Dame Judi Dench has been given the ultimate accolade of having a David Austin rose named in her honour. Rosa Dame Judi Dench (right) has rich apricot blooms with a medium-strong fragrance and strong arching stems. It makes its debut at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show alongside a freeflowering shrub rose, R. Vanessa Bell, named in honour of the Bloomsbury artist, with pink-tinged buds that open up to reveal fragrant, lemon-yellow petals, and R. James L Austin, an English rose with numerous petals and a notable fruity scent. It is named after David Austin senior’s son. All three are available as bare-root plants (£19.95) or as potted roses (£24.95) from 22 May.
