The People’s Choice
As the name suggests, this award is for the garden with the greatest numbers of votes given by the public. Voting is online, and doesn’t start until all of the main gardens have been shown on the BBC. Gardens with energetic media teams savvy at using social media may well have an advantage, but it’s the ones with a strong back story that tend to win it. More than 57,000 people voted in 2015 when the Sentebale garden designed by Matt Keightley was the winner. It was a boost for the children’s charity but also for the designer. “As designers we only ever get the chance to receive feedback from a select few – individual clients, and even less often our peers and a judging panel – so to receive an award that stems from the feedback of thousands of people is a fantastic feeling,” says Matt.
