France’s first station greening project, a winning design to revamp a Merseyside marketplace and Gardenista’s Best Amateur Garden of the year
Landscape designer Alexis Tricoire has created France’s first gare jardin (garden station) at Angers Saint-Laud in western France. The imaginatively planted installation consists of five trees (a mixture of Cinnamomum camphora and Ficus benjamina, both of which can cope with sudden changes in temperature) suspended in huge steel rings five metres above the station concourse. LED lights in the rings and supporting framework illuminate the trees at night and encourage growth. Outside on the station forecourt two further trees have also been surrounded by luminous rings that can be used as seats. The installation is part of a project initiated by SNCF Gares & Connexions.
