A new exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Public Parks, Private Gardens: Paris to Provence, explores how horticultural developments helped to reshape the landscape of France in the century after the revolution. The exhibition features 150 works by more than 70 artists, including Claude Monet, whose Path Through the Irises is shown above, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse. A courtyard area within the exhibition has been planted in the style of a 19th-century French conservatory garden, complete with the green iron benches so typical of Parisian parks.
