In the first of a new se­ries, de­signer Ula Maria looks at the power of sim­plic­ity

Glau­cous and prickly Agave salmi­ana spec­i­mens punc­ture the sea of soft-tex­tured, sun-bleached Stipa tenuis­sima in the Gar­den of Con­trast by James van Swe­den and Sheila Brady. The largest part of this mes­meris­ing plant­ing dis­play is cre­ated pre­dom­i­nantly us­ing only two plant species, which gives the gar­den its dis­tinct char­ac­ter and hyp­no­tis­ing looks.
