Battle of the Sexes

Gay Times Magazine - - Agenda -

Between the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, a true life underdog story (feminist Billie Jean King and misogynist Bobby Riggs play a tennis match to highlight gender inequality), and the charisma machines of Emma Stone and Steve Carell, Battle of the Sexes certainly has the ingredients for a critic and crowdpleasing romp.

Surprisingly, it’s the chemistry between Stone and her on-screen lover Andrea Riseborough which offers the film a tenderness that’s lacking in the jazzy ribaldry of the main plot.

While the result may be less than the sum of its parts, it’s still a solid dramedy for anyone craving a hit of the warm-and-fuzzies.
