GROVE

-

CORNELLY United footballers kicked on last week to win two major competitions at The Grove.

Former Lakeside star Byron Power and big Ben Jones struck big time in clocking up 46 points to win the Greensomes Shield.

Jones, who has also been sharpening his game up at the splendidly manicured Lakeside club, consistently got bombers off the tee while equally powerful Power had an electrifying short game around the greens.

A mammoth five points back came Craig Jones and Geraint Jones with Olly Mullins and James Thomas collecting 38 points.

Four pairs carded twos, and they came from David Jones and Martin Williams, Anthony and Joe Lacey, Vincent Lang and Neil Summers together with Robert Davies and Dave Williams.

And feared Cornelly United striker Dai Cane won the Wednesday competition with a toasty 38 points.

Gavin Davies scored 37 points for second spot, one more than Karl Murray, and Olly Mullins was fourth with 35 points.

Owing to wet weather conditions, last week’s Senior competition was cancelled, but there was action on the club scene.

Grove Seniors galloped to victory in the Arkle Cup after St Athan accepted their race had been run.

With the opening match in the Vale of Glamorgan neck and neck, ending in a 4-4 dead heat, Grove last week got back into the saddle.

And it was a case of horses for courses, as Grove came up on the outside to gain a 4.5 – 3.5, win that retained the trophy.

But Grove Seniors failed to cope with visiting St Pierre, who won the day 5.5 – 2.5 in South Cornelly.

The return of blue skies last Thursday greeted the players, but on the day the sun shone on the Chepstow players.

However, all isn’t lost for Grove, as they still have to visit St Pierre for the return match in July.

But before then, the annual Grove Seniors Nomads pilgrimage is this year heading to St Pierre next month.
