JEREMY Lawlor has been handed a one-year development contract with Glamorgan CCC, writes Tony Poole.
Lawlor, who is the attached Glamorgan player with Bridgend Town this summer, along with Pentyrch product Connor Brown (Cardiff) last week put pen to paper with the Welsh County.
Both are Glamorgan Academy products, and they are currently studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University as part of the MCC University setup.
They both played for MCCU against Glamorgan in a pre-season match, with Lawlor striking a half-century.
And in his first two visits to the crease for Bridgend Town this season in the Thomas Carroll Premier League, he made 90 and 77.
The former Monmouth School student, whose father Peter played for Glamorgan once back in the ’80s, has already made a first-class debut.
His first taste of the County Championship with Glamorgan came in the final game of the 2015 season against Kent.
Since then he’s played six first-class matches with Cardiff MCCU with a top score of 81 against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
“At present we’re fortunate to possess a number of talented young Welsh cricketers coming through the system, and Jeremy Lawlor together with Connor Brown are fine examples,” said Glamorgan CCC chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris.
He went on: “Over the last year, we’ve attracted six home-grown players which bodes well for the future of the club.
“It also illustrates our ambition to produce and nurture Welsh talent.
“Players like Lukas Carey, Aneurin Donald and David Lloyd have recently established places on the first-class circuit.
“So, opportunities exist for more players from our highly rated academy to also play for Glamorgan.’’
