COED-Y-MWSTWR

-

SENIOR Open Day at Coed-y-Mwstwr was driven to success by welcome support from both Gravells Garage Kia and Hensol Golf Academy.

While Byron Cox won home section with 42 points and John Davies (Rhondda) the category for visitors, the July 4 event followed an Independence Day theme with an American menu.

“It terms of both turnout and funds raised, it was a successful day and hopefully with continued support from Gravells Garage and Hensol Golf Academy, next year’s event will be bigger and better,” said Coed-y-Mwstwr Seniors treasurer John Rogers.

But in stark contrast to the sunshine that greeted Senior Open Day, last Tuesday saw a return to wet conditions.

The threat of rain led to fine-weather golfers giving the Senior Stableford a wide berth – and not for a first time the forecasters botched-up.

It resulted in only 11 members teeing it up, and the rain held off for RT Commander to take command, and win on 42 points.

He carded the only two of the day – holing out for birdie on the penultimate green – to place alongside further birdies on holes 14 and 16; eight pars and seven bogeys.

He finished two points in front of Mark Seldon while Irish star Philip Harrington was himself in par 36, as were Steve Clift and Philip Davies.

Peter Beynon and financial wizard John Rogers both shot 35s to finish in front of big-shot D R Cannon, who fired 32.
