IT was success at an 11th time of asking last Saturday for Rhys Francis in the 232nd staging of Porthcawl 5k Parkrun, writes Tony Poole.
The Brackla Harriers runner took the event – that attracted 325 competitors in autumnal weather conditions - in a personal best (pb) time of 17 minutes 40 seconds.
It clipped two seconds off the previous best that he achieved back in April, and it was also the fifth successive occasion for him to achieve a pb at Porthcawl Parkrun.
Another competitor from the Brackla Harriers club, Christopher Jeynes, was runner-up in a time of 18:12.
Richard Dando (Bridgend) was third in 18:18 while other fine runs came from Robert Anderson 18:27, Graeme Rand (both unattached) 19:08, Geraint Lewis (Porthcawl Runners) 19:16, Edward Rees pb 19:33, Daniel Richards (both unattached) 19:39, Rob Hunt (Bridgend) 19:45, Dafydd Jones (unattached) 19:51 and Ian Ogilvie (Brackla Harriers) 19:58.
Top female and 21st overall was Fleur Jones (Cornelly Striders) in a pb time of 20:39 from Deborah Goule (Porthcawl Runners) 20:49 (23rd), Clare Hughes (Bridgend) 21:31 (35th), Jazmine Briganti (Brackla Harriers) 21:39 (38th) and Helen Richards (unattached) 22:11 (44th).
Meanwhile, Porthcawl Parkrun organisers have served notice that as from September 30 there will be a change in the course from the seafront to Rest Bay and back.
Owing to work getting underway on a new sea defence for the Porthcawl Tarmac Beach, the lower promenade is out of bounds until completion.
