Glamorgan Gazette - - Rugby Union - With Kevin Ellis

THE big news this week is that Ireland flanker Sean O’Brien has said the British and Irish Lions could have beaten the All Blacks if they had been coached better. I’m not sure why O’Brien has come out with this statement now.

I think everyone who saw the Tests know that to draw a series in NZ is a massive achievement as they are the best team on the planet at this present time. They beat the Springboks 57-0 last week so I think the Lions and the coaches did a great job .

Well done to Cardiff Blues on their first win of the season, beating Connacht 17-15 with a last-minute try and a fantastic conversion in windy conditions in Ireland. It wasn’t the best of games but the Blues will be happy with the win.

The Scarlets bounced back with a great win and a bonus point, beating Edinburgh 28-8 in Parc y Scarlets. They are playing some great attacking rugby and looking to offload all the time. I think there will be a lot of Scarlets in the Wales squad for the autumn internationals.

It was sad to watch the Ospreys last Friday night against Benetton, losing 16-6 in Italy. The Ospreys were clueless in attack but credit to Benetton, they were fantastic in defence. I think it’s time for changes now. Steve Tandy has got to move on and some fresh coaches are desperately needed. There is no creativity from the Ospreys and confidence is really low.

The Dragons made wholesale changes for the trip to Ulster and got battered. They were outclassed by Ulster who are playing some great attacking rugby under backs coach Dwayne Peel. Unfortunately you can see the Dragons have no strength in depth. QUESTION: What do you think of Sean O’Brien’s comments about the British and Irish Lions tour? I THINK it’s pathetic. I laughed when he said the Lions should have whitewashed the All Blacks 3-0. Let’s be honest, the Lions were lucky to draw the series. If the All Blacks had taken all their chances it could have been a cricket score.
