Modern version of the Danegeld

Glamorgan Gazette - - Your Views -

THE only ace that Brussels holds in the negotiations is the knowledge that a large proportion of the taxpayer-funded political class is determined to frustrate the process of Brexit.

The UK holds the ultimate trump card, money. The UK’s negotiating position should be clarified.

We leave in March 2019, we accept WTO rules, the payments to the EU in the final year will be paid into ESCROW accounts in a consortium of Swiss banks, and released as and when the deal is finalised.

In the interim we will negotiate trade deals with the rest of the world to be signed on the day that we leave. Any convenient arrangements with the EU or its member states will be reciprocated.

Those of us who want Brexit bag and baggage are not ideologues who want to restore the British Empire, we resent the idea of paying £8bn-plus per year so that a bunch of unelected cryptofascists can regulate our lives.

Rudyard Kipling said it all, “and that is called paying the Danegeld. But we’ve proved it again and again, that if once you have paid him the Danegeld, you never get rid of the Dane”. John Lewis Betws, Bridgend
