BRIAN NI­CHOLAS last week dis­played the bull­dog spirit in pulling off a su­perb victory in a Fe­bru­ary Stable­ford event at Royal Porth­cawl.

The for­mer Brid­gend and Maesteg rugby star al­layed fears that he had peaked too soon in his il­lus­tri­ous golf ca­reer.

Hav­ing the pre­vi­ous week not both­ered to hand in his card, Ni­cholas put on his Sun­day best to shoot 38 points in win­try con­di­tions out on the Rest Bay golf course.

His card oozed con­sis­tent golf – it con­tained 11 pars and seven bo­geys – but the eight-hand­i­cap­per only had a shot in hand over an­other for­mer rugby star – Bled­dyn Tay­lor.

The ex-Swansea flier carded a two on the 14th green; he matched par on 12 oc­ca­sions and there were five bo­geys.
