Dismay as path cash bid rejected
NEWS that the Welsh Government has rejected a funding bid from Bridgend County Borough Council to plug the gap in the coastal path at Porthcawl has been greeted with dismay by Regional MS Suzy Davies.
Bridgend has been given £619,000 in total to create active travel routes throughout the borough – but its plan to create a footpath and cycleway running from Newton to link up with the Wales
Coastal path, which runs through the town to Rest Bay and beyond, was rejected.
The MS said: “While I welcome the funding for other schemes, I am disappointed, as getting the missing link in the coastal path completed would have boosted tourism and encouraged visitors who enjoy cycling and walking. I am curious why this bid out of all of them failed as I would have thought it was one of the most important. It would be interesting to get some feedback from the council about this particular one.
“Porthcawl like other seaside towns has taken a hammering because of the lockdown so anything which draws people in would have been welcome.”
The Welsh Government was asked to comment but no response had been received at the time of going to press.
