Laleston Gardening
Club: Sunday June 28 was a special day in the life of Margaret Worgan, President of Laleston Gardening Club. It was the day when Margaret celebrated her 80th birthday and tributes soon followed for this popular lady who has contributed so much to the club over many years.
She has been a prominent member of the Ladies Group from the very beginning and has served the club in many capacities.
Margaret has been president since 2013 and served as assistant treasurer between 2014 – 2019.
All guest speakers for the Ladies Section are organised by Margaret as are our summer coach trips which are arranged with meticulous attention to detail. When the club holds its traditional annual events such as quiz night, St David’s
Day dinner and harvest supper, it’s Margaret who visits the supermarket to purchase the necessary provisions ably assisted by Gerwyn Thomas who provides the transport.
A certificate hanging in Cliff Cottage states that Laleston Gardening Club has donated nearly £14,000 to the MacMillan Cancer Care Charity by supporting the World’s Biggest
Coffee Morning held in October every year and it is Margaret that takes the lead in making these arrangements.
As long ago as 1986 Margaret was awarded life membership in recognition of her commitment to the wellbeing and betterment of the club that obviously means to much to her.
She is the only surviving life member of Laleston Gardening Club following the recent death of Reverend Canon Neville G Jones.
Due to lockdown restrictions the committee regretted that they were unable to organise a celebratory afternoon tea at Cliff Cottage in honour of Margaret, but she has been made well aware of the affection in which she is held.
Friends and neighbours in Mayfield Avenue made sure she was not neglected on her special day.
There are many special people who have been associated with Laleston Gardening Club and it has almost slipped under the radar that David Oates also celebrated his 80th birthday in May in the midst of the pandemic.
David has been a great servant of the club for many years and we would wish to pay tribute to him too.
David served as Treasurer to the club for 10 years and it was greatly appreciated when he then stepped up to the plate to hold the position of chairman for one year when Glan Hathaway stepped down due to ill health.
David remains as an active member of the committee and we all congratulate him on becoming an octogenarian! Our very best wishes.
