SERGIO Romero is targeting further success with United after signing a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The Argentine joined United on a free transfer from Sampdoria in July, 2015, after previously working with Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar.

Although he quickly made his debut, against Tottenham on the opening day of the season, Romero rarely got the nod after David de Gea’s move to Real Madrid fell through.

But the 30-year-old has featured more regularly under Jose Mourinho and started 18 games under the Portuguese last season – nearly double the amount he managed under van Gaal.

Romero has been one of a handful of players to have improved under Mourinho and he only sat out three games in United’s 15-game march to Europa League glory last season.

The stopper was even selected ahead of de Gea for the final in Stockholm and kept a clean sheet as United beat Ajax 2-0 at the Friends Arena – something he remains very proud of.

“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” he told his four-year deal, which includes the option of a further year.

“Who wouldn’t want to be at the biggest club in the world? We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other.

“Of course, it was a very proud moment for me and my family to be part of the Europa League final, and I am looking forward to helping the team build on last season’s success in 2017/18.”

Despite such intense competition for the No.1 spot, Romero and de Gea have remained close friends and, tellingly, the Spaniard was the first to spring off the bench to celebrate Paul Pogba’s opener that night.

With a year left on his original deal, Romero is the latest veteran to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford following in the footsteps of Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick.

“Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional,” Mourinho added.

“He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success.

“Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is amazing in such an important role.” ●●
