IT’S the friends that we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey. It’s been a poignant week at the Reuben’s Retreat offices as Monday, August 21, marked five years since darling Reuben moved to heaven.
He is desperately missed and loved beyond words by everyone fortunate to have known him, but he also holds an incredibly special place in the hearts of people like myself who weren’t lucky enough to meet him.
So I’m writing the column this week as Nicola, Mike and Isaac spend time together as a family remembering their cherished little boy.
Despite being such a sad time and seeing Reuben’s loved ones with huge miss in their hearts, what always strikes me is ● the incredible support shown by people far and wide each August.
Our Facebook page and letterbox is filled with touching, uplifting and loving messages, each wanting to bring a little comfort to aching souls.
And that support is so powerful – it’s the foundations and fuel that nourishes Reuben’s beautiful legacy.
Reuben’s Retreat was born to help families like Reuben’s through the devastation of child bereavement, to provide a light in the darkness and the resilience to face each anniversary or special date without their child. We’re here too to help children with complex health needs and their parents and siblings as they face uncertain futures.
That work has already begun but we will be able to offer so much more once our Retreat is fully renovated.
In five years we’ve supported 470 adults and children from 251 families.
But there’s many, many more families out there that need our support today, and more will follow tomorrow.
To help celebrate our charity’s fifth birthday we’ve put together five things that you can do to play a part in ensuring our work continues: 1. Share our cause. 2. Watch for our latest events and attend wherever possible. 3. Join www.easy fundraising.org.uk – at no extra cost to you we make pennies and pounds on every purchase you make. 4. When asked, vote if you can (we sometimes get opportunities to raise money through votes). 5. Who do you know? And who do they know? Recruit your friends to support Reuben’s journey.
Our limited edition commemorative fifth birthday mugs are available now.
Visit our website (www. reubensretreat.org) or call the office on 01457 680 023 to place an order.
