AMAN CUNIAN Olympic legend and his team-mates recreated their moment of glory to raise money for those affected by the Manchester Arena bomb.

Darren Campbell, along with Jason Gardener, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis, wrote himself into British athletics folklore when the four stormed to victory in the 4x100m relay at the 2004 Games in Athens. The quartet raced together in Manchester for the first time in 13 years in the special charity race.

They competed against a celebrity team featuring former world champion boxers Anthony Crolla and Scott Quigg, TV’s fitness guru Richard Callender and Campbell’s son Aaron, as well as teams comprising Manchester’s next generation of sprinters and representatives from the city council.

Lining up in the same order they took the Olympic title back in the Greek capital, Campbell and his team defied tight hamstrings and pulled groins to speed around the track at Sportcity next to the Etihad Stadium in 43.72 seconds. The time in Greece 13 years ago was 38.07 seconds.

They have already raised £400 but hope to raise much more from a crowdfunding campaign.

The race was the highlight of the Manchester International athletics event, a now annual fixture that pits England against Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is a key part of their preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

The event itself was won by England, thanks in part to a 100m victory by Tameside sprinter Andy Robertson, who clocked 10.15 seconds, as well as a return to form for double Olympian and England team captain Nathan Douglas, who won in the triple jump with a 16.80m leap.

But the biggest cheer of the night came for the 2004 legends.

Campbell, now 43, born in Moss Side but raised in Sale, said: “This was our first opportunity to try to raise money for the fund.

“The city of Manchester is close to our hearts – I’m obviously from here and all four of us competed at the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and we really want to encourage people inspired by four retired men getting outside of their comfort zone to donate.

“We put our bodies through the pain barrier to make people smile and to encourage people to give what they can to the fund.”
