Free and unrestricted use of the arms is arguably as important in golf as it is in any other sport. That is why the vest, body warmer or gilet, whatever you like to call it, is a superb option in cool temperatures. It provides the warmth where you need it most, around your core, but lets the arms move freely so you can swing the club unimpeded. It can also be easily slipped on over the top of a polo shirt and even worn in conjunction with another mid or base layer.
Modern vests come in many different styles and especially materials, ranging from fleece-like products to those that pay close resemblance to a sleeveless puffer jacket. As always, be sure to try one on before buying, ensuring it’s relatively snug-fitting around your torso so it doesn’t come into contact with your hands when addressing the club or during the swing.
Also be wary of the neck material becoming troublesome and rubbing on your skin. A low-profile neck design, which most of the garments above have, should counteract this potential problem. Finally, make sure the polo shirt you have on underneath matches your vest, so it seems you have planned your outfit to some degree when the weather inevitably changes.
