Just like many avid golfers I own a framed copy of the ‘Ben Hogan, 1-iron’ picture. He’s surrounded by thousands of adoring fans as he hits his famous second shot into Merion’s 18th at the 1950 US Open.
I’ll now be hanging another photo alongside it (below). It’s of my eightyear-old son, Martin, at Doonbeg’s 14th. He is playing a links golf course for the very first time and the shot, which finished five feet short of the pin, was witnessed by only two: his mother and father.
