In early Au­gust, I played my most se­ri­ous com­pet­i­tive round of ju­nior golf in the an­nual St An­drews Boys’ Open. With an ap­pli­ca­tion process of low­est hand­i­cap hav­ing pri­or­ity, I ended up on the re­serve list. Thank­fully, af­ter three ag­o­nis­ing weeks, I dropped from 13th re­serve to 6th, to 2nd and then the email came through. I had made it! The four­day event con­sisted of a stroke play round (cut af­ter the first day), fol­lowed by three days of in­tense match play and the pos­si­bil­ity of play­ing the pres­ti­gious Old Course.

The first three days were played on the Eden course. With no ex­pec­ta­tions for the tour­na­ment, I ap­proached it with a very open mind. Much to my sur­prise, how­ever, I made the hand­i­cap cut with a net score of 68, plac­ing my­self 12th in the 16
