Old Thorns has established itself as one of the leading resorts in the south of England, but this is no bland hotel golf course. With sprawling views over the rolling Hampshire countryside, this tree-lined track makes the most of challenging terrain and small, undulating greens, as you will quickly discover on a pair of par 4s on the front nine that reveal some of the course’s best vistas.
The 3rd sees you play across a valley, and, depending on the length of your tee shot, you’ll be hitting across it or have a blind second uphill. The short signature 5th then looks the picture- perfect setting to fire a driver, but beware, the fairway funnels in and a greenside pond awaits any stray shots. Around the turn, water comes into play on the 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th, while the 270-yard par-4 15th is reachable if you take on the tight uphill tee shot.
As your round comes to an end, be sure to breathe in the setting of the par-5 17th, which is another elevated tee shot with a wonderful view – one that is certainly worth returning for. Stats: par 72, 6,462 yards W: oldthorns.com GF: £50wd per round, £60we per round
