A BAD EXAMPLE
In the week of the WGC Mexico Championship, the golfing authorities published proposed changes to the Rules of Golf. The purpose of these changes was to make our great game more appealing as a sport.
When the championship got underway the behaviour of some of the game’s greatest golfers was most unsporting and a shocking example to not only the young aspiring golfer but also to any non-golfers who were watching.
Amongst other things we had the horrible spectacle of Dustin Johnson spitting, Justin Thomas thumping the green close to the hole with his putter, after missing a putt, and Rory McIlroy smashing his club into the ground after a poor shot.
Maybe the authorities should consider introducing a two-shot penalty for a serious breach of etiquette.
