The product

FatPlate’s concept is simple – improve your ball compression. Made from polycarbonate with a synthetic hitting area and designed to fit perfectly in a golf bag pocket, the FatPlate offers instant physical and acoustic feedback if you strike behind the ball with your irons. Add StrikeStrips (from £14 for 100) and you get a visual reference of your strike point and swing path.

The benefit

Improved and moreconsistent ball-striking with your irons and, if you add the StrikeStrips, a better knowledge of your swing path. Designed to be used by right and left-handers, FatPlate’s markings allow you to position your ball based on the iron you’re using or to increase the difficulty as your strike improves by moving the ball closer to the polycarbonate.

The verdict

Seriously good, whatever your standard. You can throw it down anywhere and have a swing, even without a ball. Light yet robust, it really helps train a solid strike. The StrikeStrips are a little pricey but a useful addition. It’s already used by Tour pros and coaches and there are versions to improve bunker play or to help fix a shank. Driver and putting models are due to follow shortly.
