‘Whatever your age, there’s an adventure for you’
The desire to help others took TV presenter Helen Fospero on an exciting adventure
Ilove life. I know from witnessing tragic events in my career as a journalist how fragile it is, and I’m lucky that generally my cup overflows. But when I turned 50, I felt wracked by a fear of succumbing to a less exciting life. So embarked on a mission to prove to myself that my sixth decade would be fun and exciting. Most importantly, I would try to make a difference.
I’ve been an ambassador for the charity Barnardo’s for several years, and a few months ago, I was asked to lead a team of eight explorers on a fundraising trek to the Arctic wilderness of northern Finland.
I did wonder if I had bitten off more than I could chew. But a few days before I left, I visited a Barnardo’s centre and saw the work they were doing with children who needed support. Teenagers were learning maths and English, as well as practical skills like decorating and plumbing, all in a calm environment. I knew then I could meet the challenge.
The aim was to raise funds and awareness of the incredible work Barnardo’s does. I hope my experience of learning to drive a husky sled, building an igloo and cross-country skiing will inspire others to take on a challenge of their own.
Whatever your age, there’s an adventure out there for you, and you can do some good at the same time. We raised more than £10,000, and had the experience of a lifetime.
‘I hope my fundraising challenge will inspire people,’ says Helen
