HOW GOOD HOUSEKEEPING TESTS BEAUTY PRODUCTS…

Good Housekeeping (UK) - - Good Looks -

It’s hard to know whether a beauty product will really live up to its hype. At the GHI, our beauty and hair labs are equipped with high-tech tools and gadgets to assess thousands of products each year. From measuring changes in the moisture levels of skin to how well long-wear make-up lasts, they help us evaluate a product’s claims.

Before beauty products are sent out for consumer testing, we ‘blind’ them, meaning that all branding is hidden. This ensures tests are fair. They’re then sent to a panel of readers to trial at home in real-life conditions. After their verdicts are fed back to our experts, scores are added up and a mark out of 100 given. The results of these tests appear in each issue and at goodhousekeeping.co.uk/institute. For prestigious Reader Recommended testing, we also work with our reader panel. Only if they score a product highly enough will it receive the Reader Recommended endorsement – you’ll see the stamp on products, online and sometimes in-store, too. Current Reader Recommended beauty buys include Caudalie Premier Cru Serum, £90, Toppik Hair Building Fibres, £19.95, and Imedeen Prime Renewal and Time Perfection supplements, £59.99. Additionally, some products also go through our GHI Approved process. For this, we test the manufacturer’s claims and only if they pass our rigorous quality assessment will we recommend them to you via the GHI Approved stamp. Recently it’s been awarded to Clairol’s Nice ’n Easy hair colourants range, from £4.49, Clinique Moisture Surge 72 Hour Auto Replenishing Hydrator, £24, Prai Ageless Throat & Decolletage Crème, £24.99 and Neal’s Yard Frankincense Intense Lift Cream, £55.
