best for family style: secret meadows
Set on a 115-acre wildlife conservation site and surrounded by unspoilt Suffolk countryside, Secret Meadows is a fabulous rural escape.
THE VIBE Family adventures on the farm. Hire your own private chicken coop (£24) and the kids can collect fresh eggs. Learn how to make the perfect den, light a fire and track animals in a bush skills class and let everyone stay up late bat-spotting. Each tent is divided into three rooms: one containing the kitchen/ lounge/dining area plus a cabin bed; the second, a big four-poster, and the third has bunks. The lounge has a big sofa for relaxing on, and a wood-burning range. Outside, there’s seating for al-fresco dining and, out back, a private gas-powered shower and flushing loo. CHECK OUT Nearby Woodbridge is well worth a visit for pretty riverside walks and the working tide mill (a good option if the weather is bad). For a day at the seaside, Southwold with its sandy beach, pier and excellent fish and chips is a 45-minute drive away. EAT Pray for good weather and you’ll be rustling up suppers on the barbecue. If not, the honesty shop is well stocked with pies and stews, all easily cooked on the range. For a meal out, The Turks Head in the village of Haskerton is the go-to for pub grub, including a weekend brunch menu served from 10am (£10/12pp; theturksheadhasketon.co.uk). THE LOWDOWN Prices start from £124 per night for a luxury lodge tent sleeping up to six. canopyandstars.co.uk
