CHANGE MUST HAPPEN

-

I so appreciated your Black Lives Matter coverage (‘It really feels like something is changing this time’, 29 June). I’m an Asian Muslim married to a mixed-race (part-jamaican, part-english) man, both of us born here to immigrant families, and proud of our heritages. I am a mental health professional working with young people from diverse backgrounds and used to feel blessed. This changed in the last few years, which have been very confusing and painful due to the onslaught of racism and hostility played out since the last US election and Brexit. And often we’ve been told again and again by the mainstream media that our experience and pain is not real. I applaud Grazia for giving voice to women of ALL shades. Having women of colour on your cover is not a novelty gesture. I recall covers of Amal Clooney,

Nicola Adams, Rihanna and Meghan Markle. You featured the women who ran in the US Democratic primaries. You have continuously highlighted BAME authors and artists. You have touched my heart and given me comfort. Sabrina

Thanks for your coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement and how we can all change. I’ve always thought I was not racist, but I now know it’s much more than that. I feel more educated about white privilege which, if I am honest, I did not understand before. Your articles have opened my eyes and I know I still have a lot of learning to do. I am committed to educating my children that it is not enough to simply be non-racist – you must be actively anti-racist. My family has been changed forever by the Black Lives Matter movement.
