Wedding frocks only at mum’s ‘Royal’ party

Halifax Courier - - Front Page - By Brian Coates

THE Champagne is on ice, the buffet is ready.

But no one going to Michelle Doran’s party today to celebrate the Royal Wedding could get in – unless they wore wedding outfits.

Mrs Doran, a 42year-old civil servant, her daughter Scarlett Byrne, 15, mother Guza Kenyon, 70, nieces Lilanna Marchase, 26, and Kristina Grogan, 19, all put on wedding gowns.

Two other nieces – Starr Eames, 18, and Raven Eames, 13 – wore bridesmaid’s dresses and three-yearold nephew Aydan Parnell was page boy.

“Entry is prohibited to anybody not in wedding attire,” said Mrs Doran, of Oak Avenue, Todmorden.

She said her aim was to make today’s wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton a memorable one in the Doran household.

The party arrived at Oak Avenue early this morning to change into their outfits.

Then they settled down round a 42-inch flatscreen TV in the buntingdraped house to watch the Westminster Abbey ceremony.

Mrs Doran said: “As I have young nieces and a daughter I wanted to get them away from the com- puters and mobile phones and remember the day as I remember the Queen’s silver jubilee and Prince Charles wedding to Diana. Prince William is to be our future king and it would be nice for them to remember the day he got married and the fun we had.

“I love Prince William. Both me and my mum have a soft spot for him.”

Mrs Doran reflects fondly on the Queen’s silver jubilee as a young girl when she was living at Dineley Avenue, Todmorden.

“We had the biggest street party going and I loved it,” she said.

“For Prince Charles and Di’s wedding in 1981 I was at home and would not move from the TV. I had just turned 11.”

But her dedication is not shared with the men in the household.

Her husband Michael, 42, fled the family home today – along with son Conor Armstrong, 19.

Mrs Doran said: “Conor joked ‘You are no mother of mine, embarassing me like that!’”
