For­mer teacher de­nies sex charge num­ber 9

A RE­TIRED teacher has de­nied a ninth charge of in­de­cent as­sault aris­ing out of al­le­ga­tions dat­ing back al­most 40 years.

Alan Birkby, 67, pic­tured, of Ry­burn Build­ings, Sowerby Bridge, is al­leged to have com­mit­ted a se­ries of of­fences against four boys.

Birkby had de­nied eight charges of in­de­cent as­sault against three young­sters at an ear­lier hear­ing and he has ap­peared be­fore a judge at Brad­ford Crown Court to for­mally plead not guilty to the lat­est charge.

The most re­cent charge al­leges he in­de­cently as­saulted the com­plainant at eight by stroking his thigh.

The of­fence is said to have been com­mit­ted be­tween 1972 and 1973.

The eight other al­le­ga­tions of in­de­cent as­sault, which Birkby has also de­nied, cover a pe­riod be­tween 1972 and 1981 and in­volved boys aged be­tween seven and 11.

Dur­ing a 30-minute hear­ing be­fore Judge Peter Benson, it was con­firmed Birkby’s trial, which could last six days, will be­gin on Oc­to­ber 3.

Birkby was granted un­con­di­tional bail un­til his next pre-trial hear­ing which is due on June 24.
