Former teacher denies sex charge number 9
A RETIRED teacher has denied a ninth charge of indecent assault arising out of allegations dating back almost 40 years.
Alan Birkby, 67, pictured, of Ryburn Buildings, Sowerby Bridge, is alleged to have committed a series of offences against four boys.
Birkby had denied eight charges of indecent assault against three youngsters at an earlier hearing and he has appeared before a judge at Bradford Crown Court to formally plead not guilty to the latest charge.
The most recent charge alleges he indecently assaulted the complainant at eight by stroking his thigh.
The offence is said to have been committed between 1972 and 1973.
The eight other allegations of indecent assault, which Birkby has also denied, cover a period between 1972 and 1981 and involved boys aged between seven and 11.
During a 30-minute hearing before Judge Peter Benson, it was confirmed Birkby’s trial, which could last six days, will begin on October 3.
Birkby was granted unconditional bail until his next pre-trial hearing which is due on June 24.
